North Beach, Rush – Lifeguards

COMHAIRLE CONTAE FHINE GALL

FINGAL COUNTY COUNCIL

BALBRIGGAN/SWORDS AREA COMMITTEE MEETING

[Services A – Operational Matters]

Thursday, 8th October 2015

ITEM NO. 17

Question: Councillor B. Dennehy

"To ask the Chief Executive as to the year when life guards ceased to patrol the

North Beach for the summer season."

Reply:

Fingal’s Lifeguard service patrols the designated beaches according to the published

Bathing Season requirements i.e. weekends for the month of June and every day for

July and August. The lifeguard rosters are carefully managed to ensure that

sufficient lifeguards are rostered to work, and that adequate days off/rest time is

included.

Rush North Beach is not a designated bathing area. When there is a forecast of good

weather, the expectation is that the numbers of visitors to beaches will rise and the

lifeguards are rostered accordingly, and resources permitting, lifeguards may also be

rostered on beaches which are not designated bathing areas.

This summer, the decision was taken to roster Lifeguards on Rush North Beach for

the August weekend as the Rush Harbour Festival took place that weekend and the

main activity of the festival took place at the harbour park which is just off Rush

North Beach.
